Setting Fertile Eggs Under Broody Due to Hatch November, Come Join Me!!!

Yesterday two of my hens' eggs hatched and were very healthy and happy... today they were just gone! My only guess is that over night rats took them! My first ever chicks that were hatched by one of my hens and now their gone! :( She has three more eggs under her that will hopefully hatch! This sucks so much! :rant

Oh No! Can you move her somewhere safer? Do you think it could have been a snake? We' e got black snakes here, I've got to keep any eye out for them.

I don't think it was a snake. We hear the rats walking around on our roof and see their foot prints! I didn't actually want to kill any of them and tried catching them and releasing them far away but I only caught 2 or 3. But now I put poison on the roof and my mom is buying some rat traps now. I don't care about them anymore and if I see one in our yard I'll kill it! Stupid rats! I have no other place to put her but if one of the eggs still hatches I'll find a place for them!

Oh TimBaumann how terrible :( Fingers crossed that the remaining eggs hatch. GET THOSE DIRTY GOOD FOR NOTHING RATS! Poor mumma hen.

This morning I noticed that my broody hen was walking across the front lawn... with a CHICK following behind her. I was soo happy until I realised...... it has fluffy feet! It wasn't one of the eggs I had put under her! When I found her broody I removed all of her eggs (or so I thought) and placed some of my game bird eggs under her that I am so desperate to have hatch.

I must have missed one of her eggs..... **** **** ****! My good game bird eggs only had 4 days to go and they were stone cold. I have placed them in the incubator to see how it goes. Ohhhhh I just checked them now & there is still movement!!!!!!

I'll have to work out what to do next.... do I put them under a hen that has just gone broody (first timer - started sitting yesterday) and let her hatch them....... or do I leave them in the incubator and hatch them there? I currently have about 30 eggs in the bator that are not due until the 28th......

Dilemmas!!!!

Well 5 out 6 of my chicks have hatched from under my Sussex broody today and yesterday and 2 chicks have hatched so far from under Red Sex-Link (Isa Brown) broody but Ive just found one dead on the floor, must of fallen out of the nest box

TinaK, 'dilemmas' is right! Feel like I'm always doing the 'chicken shuffle'. Who goes where, who gets along with who, WHO to breed to who...and WHO will hatch these eggs out, now that my broody quit! I sure hope your game birds hatch!!

Luke, sooooo sorry about your chick. It is the absolute pits losing the babies.

I had one egg hatch 3 whole days after the others. I've had her in the incubator as Momma left her behind, she finally fluffed a bit and was somewhat stable on her feet, so I popped her back under the broody now that she's settled for the night. I am both scared and excited about what I'll see tomorrow morning.

My last lil one was a bit unstable this morning, put her in the incubator with a hatchmate for the day and back under Broody Momma tonight.

Here is my one Leghorn chick. This chick is the 3rd one to hatch and only one alive but one egg is cracking at the moment, Mother doesn't like the Minorca chicks at all as shes rejected and killed 2 already.
