Does anyone know how to build a box for a setting hen to be by herself in? Is there anything special that I need to know before I start building it? Fully enclosed, partially open, how much open/closed, or how big it needs to be, etc.
I have had the same hen try to set on some eggs about 5 times and the closest she has ever been was 2 weeks. She quit and I cracked those eggs open to see if they were actually developing and they were a big sack of blood instead of yolk and egg whites so I was really happy! I know that the eggs are fertile and that the hen is perfectly capable of setting and raising chicks, because she is a silkie/wyandotte cross. I have 2 hens that are from the same mother and they are both my favorite hens, and they love to go broody. They have both tried to set multiple times and neither of them has ever actually hatched any eggs. I need to separate them from each other and the rest of the flock because the other hens always go into the nest that these two hens are in and break the eggs and leave new ones, which is not helpful at all. I want to know if anyone has an idea on how to build a "Brooder Box" for one hen to be alone and focus on her setting and hatch me some chicks! Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thank you!
