Setting Leghorn

This actually happened to us, the hen succesfully raised and hatched 5 little Rhode Island/ leghorn mix chicks. We were very surprised lol

I have an 'Ideal 236' which is a hybrid derived from white Leghorn from ideal hatchery. She is broody right now...I think, but she is continuing to lay eggs---so maybe she isn't...but she is sitting on the nest--- Hope she will go the 21-days.

Mine won't budge and isn't laying any more. Just great. You buy leghorns for layers and they want to go broody. LOL Oh well, will head over to a buddy's tomorrow to rip off some fertile eggs to stick under her along with the three Buff Orpingtons and one Buff Orpington/Black Australorp cross hens that are also setting---on wooden nest eggs.

I do! I too have a White Leghorn sitting! Go figure, shocked us. She has 10 eggs and is on day 15, so we shall see. She is doing very well so far. I have BO's that I thought would be the first to go broody, but no, momma leghorn:)

It seems that broodiness can mostly be bred out of a breed of chickens, but I don't think it can be entirely eliminated. I had a White Leghorn go broody this spring as well and she's a commercial bird. Fortunately just that one.
