Setting on Good Friday

Well I candled my Marans eggs day 10 and had 3 scrambled darn Postal Service anyway so from 18 I'm down to 11 though I paid for 12 so not bad and from 7 turkeys (Bourbon's) I have 4 left .

Most folks are lucky to get 50% to hatch from the original eggs shipped, so it sounds like you'll have a decent hatch.

Last time I hatched Marans, I had 18 sent and hatched out 11... but only 4 were pullets!

Okay this is my first time to hatch eggs, with my incubator of course. And I candled them this evening just got done I had 5 that looked almost like the store egg I candled, but since it is my first time i left them to one side of the turner for a few more days. There were some that looked like a spot and veins and then there were some that looked like a large mass inside that took up the biggest part of the egg but not sure if that is good or bad. I was using a can light to check them with but I'm thinking that it may not have been bright enough so I may try a brighter bulb in a couple of days or get a bright pen light from Wal-Mart and see how it does. Are there any thoughts on the eggs with the large mass inside, it kind of looked like the pictures that are shown on this sight at day 10 but I am uncertain. I see you talking about scrambled eggs how do you know what they are, I,m hoping your not going to tell me it's the dark mass.

Thank you

I was able to find few eggs where I saw movement inside. But why is an egg that has movement is about 2/3 solid and 1/3 like "empty", there is like a line through, dividing it into two parts. Is 1/3 of the egg liquid? Can I be keeping too much water inside? The eggs had been divided like that a 1.5 days ago also, but I only put too much water (so it overflowed the container for it, so I had to move eggs away so they don't get wet) less then a day ago.

Many eggs I candled don't look good inside

and I don't see the movement either. I have 3 doz eggs in there and about half (I should count tomorrow) is brown (and greenish brown) where I am not able to see inside when candling. This is my first time incubating.

Most times, your dark mass, is a growing chick.

Be careful leaving clears in the bator. They can sometimes harbor bacteria, go rotton and explode on you.... and ruin the rest of the eggs in the hatch.

Hi, I'm new to this experience as well. Today is Day 18, some have movement but they don't take up the entire egg like some candeling pictures i've seen...I wonder if my chicks are a little behind..?

Kathy, you need a better light. I got an LED Lenser from home depot. I can see Marans eggs fairly decent.

On Saturday we saw embryos doing cartwheels and sommersaults.... of course, most of those were blue Ameraucana eggs.

I agree you might need a better light. i can see mine moving and even see veins starting on some of the ones i put in on the 8 already. Those i am hand turning so i ck some times when i have to turn them. Good luck everyone
