My understanding is that you should NOT open the bator if there are any eggs pipped or zipping. Your 24 hour chick is fine. Even if you put him in a brooder, he is not likely to eat or drink anything for a while. Think about the size of a yolk! He will be chewing on that for a while, yet. I think they are okay for 48 hours in there or even more. But don't quote me.
I am going to upload some pics here in a minute...
I never thought about the yolk... good point! Maybe I can do a search and see how long they can be in the bator without water. Although they are pecking at the condensation on the glass. Might help clear that up a bit. Thanks gckiddhouse! Now I am feeling modivated to get some pics posted too.
Cant wait to see everyones pics!! This is way too much fun and has the dangerous potential to lead to a life long addiction.
We have 3 chicks. 2 were born in the bator last night and one was born under the broody either last night or early this morning.
Here is my story: My bator sucks! And my broody has been bothered a lot by my silly Sussex hen! She is having broody envy. Here is what she has been doing:
See her stealing eggs???
She has been getting in there almost daily, but I didn't realize it until we saw her do it the other day.
Today is day 21 and the last thing the broody needs is to be disturbed, but the silly Sussex was back and stealing eggs again!
The eggs in the bator are quiet and not moving or pipping. The eggs under the broody don't seem to be doing anything either. Probably due to all that Sussex silliness! I am trying to be hopeful, but, I am feeling like we may only get these three babies. One mutt, one Polish cross and one W/BWA. That would mean that ALL my shipped eggs are a bust! In fact that would mean that only ONE egg that I paid for would have hatched! This is sucking badly.
All of this talk of hatching is so exciting. Please add me to your list, my eggs should hopefully hatch on the 19th of April. I have 24 eggs that I can see veins and movement in. They are BO, BA, SLW, and RIR all from a RIR rooster. I hope that I have the most BO and RIR crosses. I love my Buff Orps! I am new to hatching, (bought the bator for the kids you know?!!!) but not new to BYC!
We can hear peeps coming from the eggs!! Why don't they pip already???? I am sitting there with my face pasted to the bator, tapping on the glass (litterally) and nothing!!
How long can they live in the egg without pipping? Are they running out of air?
I think I need an adult beverage...

But here is the cuteness. Probably all roos...
Im so with ya! We bought 6 eggs, not alot and did effect our odds but none the less this hatch was to test our homemade bator. But it looks like maybe only maybe one of our silkies (shipped eggs) is left and nothing... not even a pip.
Its day 22 so I am getting a bit discouraged. On top of that my kids keep putting stuff in the bator... grass and flowers for the chicks.
(slipping them in through the vent holes).
If I hear "MOM Please let me hold one... ONE more time!" The worst part of it all.... I REALLY really want to hold one too!!
YEP might have to join you in that adult beverage. I think my patience is out the door today!
