The one mix died today. Never did open its eyes or really stand up long. i have one more that hatched. It has a bum foot, but I taped it straight. Found that on here somewhere.
I have 2 more silkies that have hatched today from the other incubator!!!! i think i am going to toss the eggs in the other incubator cause it is starting to smell a little funky!!
I cleaned it all out today. My first attempt at incubation, and I am marginally happy with my success. I wished for a higher rate, but am shocked that I hatched any.
I have 6 in the brooder. There were a bunch of eggs that I wanted to hatch that did not. I mostly tried the dry method, I say mostly because I added a little water on day 1. My turner worked great. I may have went into lock down 1 day early, figuring I started in the late afternoon. My temps fluctuated a little, but I did get 24 viable eggs to lockdown. I do not have a fan, but I may add one. My problems came after lockdown. My temps were maybe a degreee high. My hunidity started falling a little, and when I added, it went way up. All but one that hatched did so in a carton setup. I liked that idea.
All in All - - - I am hooked! I see me starting another batch in a week or so. Timing it so these chicks are out of the brooder. Thanks for every ones advice.
I cleaned out my incubator two days ago. Out of the 8 eggs that didn't hatch, 6 never started growing at all. However, the other two contained full grown chicks that apparently died immediately before time to hatch. They never pipped at all. I'll have to research to find out why that happens. But at least I got 15 healthy chicks out of my first hatching attempt.
I could see myself becoming addicted to hatching, too. However, I plan on putting up the incubator and waiting for awhile before doing it again - at least a month or two - or maybe I'll wait till spring. Right now I've got three sets of chickens to take care off - my 7 full grown hens - my 8 juveniles and now my babies. So my hands are full for now.
