Setting up my Edmonton flock

Hi all - my city has opened its backyard chicken program and I've set my mind to adding 3 hens to my yard this year then another 3 in either 2026 or 27, to our max allowable of 6.

Looking forward to chatting with the community!

We get frigid cold (down to minus 40) to high 30s C in the summer so curious to know everyone's favourite breeds that can be happy(ish) in either type of extreme temperature.

Any breed with a tight comb to the Head generally does well in cold weather. Wyandottes, Ameraucanas, Chanteclers and Easter Eggers come to mind.

You might want to have a mix of breeds so you can experience a few different ones to see which you prefer for future flock additions.
