That's nice your city is allowing chickens now. I think @DobieLover listed some good breeds and what to look for. Chanteclers were developed in Canada so I think that is a top candidate for sure.

Hi all - my city has opened its backyard chicken program and I've set my mind to adding 3 hens to my yard this year then another 3 in either 2026 or 27, to our max allowable of 6.

Looking forward to chatting with the community!

Russian Orloffs come to mind, and from my own experience with this breed in mahogany and spangled I can say that they are very friendly and curious in manner while frost hardy and prolific layers.
