I have been doing quite a bit of research, or rather had a little while ago, about having chickens when I moved from GA to MD. I really wanted to get some, but where we moved to I thought the law prevented me from having them if I didn't have 2 acres. I come to find out I can get up to three, so I am really looking into this again. Here is where I was hoping for some help.

I would love to get Ameraucana's, I love the very idea of the colored eggs, and I am not after a heavy egg layer or meat bird. I have a three year old, a 9 month old, and two solid sized dogs that are very friendly to a lot of things (haven't tried chickens but I suspect they should be fine.). I think chickens would be great for my 3 year old, a co-worker has 3 chickens of his own and he says they do wonders with his sons and his kids love them. Here is the catch, are Ameraucana's the right bird to get in my situation, and if so, where can I get them? They will be a first for me, and since I am in the military, not sure where I might move to next. My goal is to get chicks that I can raise with my kids, and if worst comes to worst because of having to move somewhere, having dinner out of them. Thoughts?

Thank you for your time in service. Maybe you could come up with a different plan B. I don't think the kids would be happy to find they have to move AND EAT their pets. Perhaps you could ask around in advance if someone else would take in your chickens., when the time comes.

If you get a tiny bantam breed like seramas they would be easier to travel with -maybe they could move with you. Seramas were bred to be housepets.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You might try posting in your state thread for where people in your area find chickens locally or if anyone has some available. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread The state thread would also be a good place to find a new home for your birds if you need to move. Easter Eggers (hatcheries tend to sell them as Ameraucana) are nice birds that make a nice pet chicken. Here is the BYC member reviews page for them https://www.backyardchickens.com/products/easter-eggers/reviews Thank you for your time in service and good luck with your chicken project.

Thanks for the state link. I wasn't able to find it on my own, but it has been a great help now :).

Welcome to BYC!

And welcome to the world of chickens! So glad you could join our community. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Make yourself at home here on BYC and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC! You've received some great advice. I would keep chickens and dogs separate at all times, I learned the hard way with my first flock. Good luck to you.

Thanks, and yes, I don't plan on letting them get close until the chickens are full grown AND I am there watching them. Even then... probably won't do it. But don't want the chickens stressing from the scent and sight of an animal that is naturally their predator.
