"Settling" Shipped Eggs: Necessary? With Auto-Turner?

Eek!
Despite what I thought was good long settling period (96 hours) for my shipped eggs I found an air bubble sitting off to the side in the small end of the egg (candled at day 6.5).
The very sad part for me is that there is an adorable, wiggly little embryo developing in the large end of the egg, right where the air cell should be....

I am trying not to get too attached to these little ones. I have no issue culling the eggs that just won't develop, but this little embryo looks so vibrant and active.... I would hate for it to make it all 21 or so days only to drown on the way out just because the egg was shipped instead of hatched in place.

Is this little chick to be a goner even if it makes it to hatch day? If I turn the egg upside down (i.e. small end up) will pip the air bubble on the side or will pip down? Any advice?

Boy, that's terrible :( I hope the best for it! I can't tell you if it's a goner or not....I am sure someone on here can....did you try doing a search?

Shipped eggs can be tricky I guess...I hope I get ANY development out of mine...they were so banged up ....

Greetings from Nebraska:). Hope you all don't mind if I chime in...I have hatched shipped eggs in the past and have had excellent hatch rates (even with silkies). Which now I am reading are harder to hatch. I had 24 shipped eggs in my incubator recently when they arrived I let them sit for two days. I also purchased an egg turner ( which was a new thing for me, in the past I gave hand turned all of them). Anyway...they were scheduled to hatch on Friday ! I was crazy excited for these little guys because they were frizzled Cochin bantams. Long story short I lost all of them! Still can't believe it...I have never had this happen....moving on...I have six shipped showgirl eggs in my incubator that are scheduled for lockdown tomorrow. I have tried not to handle these eggs much because of them being shipped etc...I candled yesterday and all of them have air sacks that are running up the sides! Uuuugghhhh! I am going to put them in the hatching bator tomorrow and wait and see. I have looked at a lot of the threads on BYC. And it looks like it is possible to get healthy chicks even if the sacks are down the sides.....looks like I have a few ( hanging over the side of the bed with a flashlight staring into the incubator just waiting for that one little wiggle Or pip or peep! ). ahead of me! ;). I have never used the egg carton method for lockdown but from I read this is the best way....so I will give it a shot! Thinking about candling again tonight and tracing the air saks just in case I need to intervene. Although this is something I hope that I don't have to do!
I appreciate all of the great information and wish all of you luck with your hatches!

I am so sorry to hear that. I know how you feel. I just candled again to make absolutely sure and I only have ONE viable egg. Just to make sure, I candled an egg, then cracked it open on a plate and then dumped it into a bowl, then repeated... nothing but scrambled eggs... by time I was done, I had one egg in the incubator all by its self and a whole bowl full of very expensive scrambled egg. So sad...

To make matters worse, the one poor remaining egg has an air cell that is huge and more on the side of the egg then on the fat end of the egg. I am not sure if it is going to be okay to hatch or not. I hope so. Although, one chick is going to be very lonely.

Just as a reminder, I got 6 golden cuckoo marans, 6 blue wheaten amerucanas and 6 salmon faverolle. The one survivor is a salmon faverolle.

UGGG... I have been so protective and dedicated to these eggs. I have babied them since I received them in the mail. I have sat and watched them! I have talked to them. I have become very attached to them and I am still having chills from cracking them open. Now I watch the incubator and feel sorry for that one egg. I told him/her to keep fighting!

Sigh.....I got my eggs....

out of 24....13 are not cracked or broken.Of those, 5 had to be washed.2 have air cells that are bubbles...and the rest are wobbly. I will rest for 24 hours, then set in a Still Air for 7 days,no turning...we'll see.

The seller packed very well, newspaper around each egg...in styrofoam egg cartons, packed around top, bottom and sides with newspaper... but the eggs came from Ca to Ny and the PO had to have really thrown the box around...I think from now on I will order from closer by.

Chickee35- So sorry to hear that! This is my first attempt at shipped eggs...it's not looking good.

And to top it off, I have 6 goslings in the mail right now...I hope they get better treatment!!!

well i'm glad i'm not the only one. i candled on day 7 and out of 16 shipped silkie eggs i have 3 good ones and 3 iffy ones left. and out of my 12 shipped EE eggs, only 3 good ones and 4 iffy ones...out of the 4 iffy ones, 2 have partial bloodrings, i'm just hoping and not throwing them away yet. so i'm pretty sad about both. i was looking forward to having a couple silkie hens, and i'll be pretty lucky if i get 2 hens outta these 3 eggs. and i was looking for quite a few EE hens...and that's not gonna happen. :( i feel like ordering more eggs, but i hate to spend the money and besides, hubby would kill me.

Curranchickens-

I am so sorry about your eggs! How discouraging! I sure hope you get at least the one!!

How far were your eggs shipped from to you?

I am just going to set mine tonight and forget 'em. I would actually wait another 24 hours to set but they are already like a week old from having them gathered and then shipped (or should I say THROWN to NY!)

I did candle and all but 2 air cells are wobbly....the other 2 are BUBBLES

So sorry....I wish the best for you! If I could send you eggs, I would. I have never shipped eggs before...but in the fall i will have Showgirls and Silkies from breeder quality stock.

I know you were looking forward to them and I hope some hatch and they are all pullets!!

Thought I'd show a pic of how the PO treated my eggs

these are the ones that didn't make it...no wonder...and when I candled, I saw one with a smaller crack, but will hold out...so again, 13 out of 24.....all have wobbly air cells save 2....they have just bubbles...

The two that look ok in the pic actually have deep puncture type cracks in them....like when a hen pecks her egg....

Thank you! I hope that if the little one makes it to 'pip' day that it is able to make it out of the shell. It would be different if it stopped developing or something, but full term chicks who don't make it out of the shell make me sad.
Shipped eggs are tricky! The more I read about them on the forums, the more I hope I end up with a decent number of ladies from this hatch. Then maybe I can see what it is like to hatch eggs that haven't been shipped clear across 10 states. lol
Good luck with yours!! I hope they do well, keep us posted!

thats not very good packing, JMO.... when i recieved mine, they where all in individual bubble wrap, in and egg carton, that was bubble wrapped, cushoned in a box, with that box cushioned in another bigger box.... wrapping them in news paper seems a little lazy or cheap to me. just my opinion though. im sorry that they arrived like that, but no wonder when the shipper wraped them in newspaper....
