I bought these cuties yesterday from someone on Craigslist. He said he didn’t know the breeds, claims they are pullets, but I’m not sure of that either. Any thoughts?

That’s what I was afraid of. Any speculation on the breed(s)? My chicken FB groups is going with EE on the red one, and several opinions on the black and white one.

How can you tell what they are at this stage. I’m curious as a new guy here.

In general: comb size, comb color, wattle size/color, feather shape, feather color

Feather shape: saddle and hackle feathers have pointed ends in males over a certain age, rounded ends in females.

Feather color: certain colors and patterns are gender-specific, and certain breeds or hybrids have males and females with different colors or different patterns of color.

For these particular birds, I see combs that are large for birds of that age, and that are red or dark pink (pullet combs would probably be smaller and look yellow or light pink), and I think I see pointed saddle and hackle feathers coming in on the white/gray bird.

Other posters may have noticed different details than I did about these particular birds, and may look for other details that I neglected to mention in my general list.
