Hello everyone,

I have a 7 month old chicken that has diarrhea for about 5 days. In the last 2 days her mouth is open and seems to have a hard time to breathe. She does not eat or drink, and I am feeding her with a needless syringe. She is very tired and weak and lost weight. Her poop is green and very watery. I made some search and giving her CORID mixed in drinking water since yesterday but no improvement as of now. Any suggestions about what to do? Thanks.

Welcome to BYC, sorry your pullet is unwell. :hmm

How does her crop feel? Is it hard or squishy or flat? Is there any odor coming from her beak? Does the breathing sound congested or just open mouth?

Has she laid any eggs yet and if so when was the last time?

Where is she staying when she is weak and tired.. in the coop, kinda with the flock but not actively foraging, in a nest? standing or sitting, etc. These are all just possible clues.

What part of the world are you located in?

It does NOT sound like coccidiosis from your description, but was she just introduced into a new pasture, new to your place, or any recent changes to feed, additions to the flock, possible poisoning? how many other birds in how much space? What is the standard feed routine including treats and supplements? Free ranging or confined? I personally would be trying to boost the immune system with electrolytes and a supplement (B complex bare minimum). That's because I don't think it's coccidiosis but if you have good reason to believe that IS it.. then B vitamins would not be a recommended course of action. Do you have access to a tractor supply? there are homemade chicken electrolyte recipes but BE careful.. some mixes (like molasses) actually increase diarrhea so use sugar instead.

Hope this helps some or others join in and your gal recovers quickly! :fl

Her crop is soft and squishy, there is no odor coming from beak, and there is no breathing sound, just the mouth is open (Just checked her).
She started laying eggs but I am not sure when was the last time she laid eggs. I isolated her and put into the garage after she had diarrhea. She stands most of the time in a large box in the garage. I have had these 4 chickens for about 7 months and bought them from Tractor Supply. They have a fenced area around 300 squarefeet and other 3 chicks seem healthy. I live in Memphis TN, and we have several Tractor Supply stores around here. I saw those eloctrolits there in Tractor Supply maybe I should have tried them. I am giving them pellets and corn scratch I buy from Tractor Supply.

Thank you so much for replying my posts

Is her wings droopy and feathers scraggly? Welcome to byc. so sorry about your chicken.

can you feel her keel? Is she unsocial and in a corner? Depressed?

Thank you. Yes, she looks depressed. She was fine with other 3 chicks for about 7 months and all of a sudden she had a severe diarrhea that has not passed for 5 days now.

Does she have little to no appetite? Dehydration or seems to only be drinking water?

Huddling or acting chilled, blood or mucus in the feces?

sorry for all the questions, this will help me or other members determine what this could possibly be! :)

No appetite. Does not eat or drink at all. I am giving smashed pellets and water with a syringe. The poop is greenish and watery, no blood. Her mouth is open most of the time.

Sounds like coccidia honestly to me. Can you take her to a vet. Is she a layer and her combs and waddles are pale?

Her crop is soft and squishy
Squishy is not normal.. I wonder if there's a blockage somewhere or what they call sour crop?

That looks like a very uncomfortable stance NOT like the coccidiosis hunch to me.
Thank you. Yes, she looks depressed. She was fine with other 3 chicks for about 7 months and all of a sudden she had a severe diarrhea that has not passed for 5 days now.
Separation can add to depression.. Anything (virus or other) she may have, the others were already fully exposed to. It also make reintegration hard.. maybe keep her at least in their sight if possible.

That looks like more solid waste then I would expect to see if it were egg binding.. but, I am no expert. There might be an egg in there.

I wonder if @Wyorp Rock or @Eggcessive will have any insight here, TIA.

I personally would be treating for crop condition (or at least eliminating that possibility) not coccidiosis. The symptoms and background information don't align with coccidiosis according to my experience.

No corn scratch please during treatment. How much is given regularly though? Sometimes (in birds genetically predispose somehow), it can contribute to fatty liver hemorrhagic syndrome.. and organ failure does cause open mouth breathing and probably contribute heavily to waste composition. It is usually characterized by sudden death, but maybe the fatty liver throws clues before it blows???

It can be hard to diagnose diarrhea without a vet or having a fecal float done. Worms, coccidiosis, or cancer could be possible reasons. I would check her crop again early in the morning. How much Corid are you giving? It sounds like she could be very sick, and at her age and with the yellow I would wonder if she has a reproductive infection. An antibiotic, such as amoxicillin twice a day can help. Some feed stores might have Aqua Mox amoxicillin, formerly called Fish Mox. If you should lose her, sometimes you can get a necropsy by your state vet. Here is a list of them to contact:
