Hi, I have a huge English Orpington cockerel with an extremely large comb and big wattles. I've been keeping him separate this winter to try and keep him from getting frostbite. I loved how pretty his comb and wattles were, and haven't had a straight combed bird in a while. So I had him in a reinforced prefab coop on his own. I added lots of ventilation and have been keeping it very clean and dry. He had been doing great until yesterday.
Yesterday was -15 and 80% humidity, and I noticed that morning his comb and wattles were purple-y. I rubbed some Vaseline on the very gently and put him back. That evening I checked on him and his wattles were HUGE. They were full of fluid like balloons and so was the throat area in between them. His comb was extremely dark purple and just looked very painful. We were at a friend's house last night and when I got back it was late, so I just put him in the extra pen inside my shed. It's not insulated but I run a heater in there sometimes for my ducks.
What can I do? Is he going to lose his once beautiful comb and wattles?
