Severely impacted crop miracule cure

Thanks for this post! I have a girl with a pretty impacted crop (just stuffed full of what feels like pellets and grain). She’s acting normal and passing a little bit of solids with her watery poop, but I don’t think her crop has emptied for several days. I kept her inside today and will probably do so tomorrow to keep her from eating any solid food. I have grit in her indoor pen as well as water with electrolytes/probiotics. I’ve been giving her olive oil and massaging her crop (do you think the olive oil will work as good as the mineral oil?). Either way, I’m glad it sometimes takes longer than a day or two to get things working again. I was staring to worry I might not be able to help fix the problem.

I dont think olive oil would have the same effect because its not a laxative. Natural laxatives dont force your body to have a bm but just encourage it by adding in natural break down of foods that might be stuck in your gut. Try the mineral oil and let us know how it works for you

Thanks! I’ll try that later - I think I have some mineral oil in my coop medicine cabinet. Also, my impacted hen offloaded a big clump of worms (I think round worms) last night (:sick). I’ve been suspecting worms for a while since I had another hen with a blockage last week and some of the girls have been laying soft-shelled eggs. I’ll be treating everyone with SafeGuard soon (all the other good, entire-flock wormer stuff I can’t get in California :(, so SafeGuard will have to do).

I wouldn't use them together since dewormers tend to give them diarrhea. You dont want to compound that with a laxative. Use the dewormer first and if shes still impacted try the mineral oil. She might just be impacted with the worms. The other option is see if you can get her to empty her crop by regurgitating. Hold her upside down and massage the crop upwards. Do this in only 30 second intervals and upright her inbetween so she can breathe. I havent had much success with it but its worth a try

Thanks for the tips!

Thats what we're all here for! Let us know how shes doing. :thumbsup
Just gave her some Safeguard (since she’s inside and away from the flock, I’m just going to give it to her directly and start dosing everyone this weekend).

Hopefully I gave her the right amount - mixed it with some water to make the dose ‘smaller’ and gave it to her right away. Other than seeing a few more shorter worms in her poop, as well as her crop still being pretty full, she’s still acting pretty normal.

She did smell pretty bad, but that might be the result of pooping out the worms :sick. I cleaned her off and cleaned out her bin.
