Sevin Dust on your chickens?

i love seven dust ..... if it doesnt kill my baby canaries and it never ever has, its not gonna harm our chickens so no worries .

I also use 5% Sevin dust on my chickens, nest boxes, coop floor. I've used it on day old lice infested chicks I had purchased years ago and worked great, no harm to chicks.

Since I try to stay organic, I try to stay away from Sevin Dust, but the coop gets a treatment once a year. I use DE on my chickens and garden plants, but break out the Sevin when needed.

Yep, I'm in the middle of treating my flock with it now. I found frickin' lice on my poor wellie last weekend, and then on everyone else since I checked the whole flock. Our BA and BR had them the worst, so off to the store for Seven dust. Dusted them all and will do so again this Saturday. So far, so good, though the lice really make me angry for some reason...blood sucking *&%$&^%$!!!

Anywho, if they don't have anything bothering them, then there's no reason to be dusting them with pesticide. DE as a preventative is fine (also for helping to dry up droppings and keep odor/moisture down), but once you've got something going, kill it rather than powdering it.

DH is bringing some home now lol I tried that poultry dust NOT! does NOT work if you have bugs. as preventative??? IDK
I'm gonna dust them ALL, and in the dusting areas

I am new here. Just got my new chicks on Saturday. Should I Sevin dust the coop before they live in it permanently as a preventative?

I would never recommend preventative, over-the-counter pesticide usage. You end up killing/poisoning/risking a lot of beneficial insects that way; e.g. honey bees (who are particularly susceptible to Sevin).

If nothing has ever lived in the coop, there's no point in dusting it. Lice live primarily on the birds and do not last long off of them. Mites are a lot more persistent and tend to reside in hidey holes through the daylight, but if you haven't had a case of them (or fleas) in the coop, then no reason to treat.

Just keep the coop clean and dry and it'll take care of 90% of your coop pest problems. Check your birds about once every 2-3 weeks for evidence of pests and treat as necessary (IF necessary) and you'll be alright.

we only use it if we have to. the last 2 years i have seen almost no potato bugs on my potato plants so never dusted them. i had a few cabbage plants that i dusted this year but only once. maybe since we switched to mostly heirloom seed and not using commercial fertilizers, the bugs aren't so interested. for the chickens we mix a little sevin dust with wood ash and de for the chickens to dust bathe in for the summer. we also paint their roosts with burnt motor oil. no lice or mites here.

2 weeks ago I found the coop was infested....everything came out, I dusted the coop, boxes, roosts and birds with 7 and haven't seen any critters since. I have 2 large rubber tubs with DE for the birds to dust in, but it didn't do the job 7 did.....and nobody was sick or died.....
