Hello, I lost my little hen that I was treating for lice or mites, I really do not know what would be considered to be a serious infestation by these things so I am not certain this is the reason I lost her, I did see little dark brown bugs crawling around her face.
I used different treatment methods none of whaich helped her and I have been hearing about success with Sevin dust. I did a search and found this "Gulfstream Home & Garden S7007 Sevin Dust", now it didn't say anything about using on birds but is this what you use? Maybe if I could get this cleared up I would get some and treat my flock, I do think they have some kind of bug they do seem to be picking at themselves some and they also have some balding areas that I do not think is being done by the roo or the other hens. What do you think? Is there a specific name brand or something that you use and the cost. From what I saw there it was very inexpensive. Thanks!

You need permethrin spray. It sounds like they have a pretty bad infestation that needs immediate attention and a strong quick solution. Normally I do not suggest chemicals, but this sounds like a situation where I would break down and use chemicals myself. Spray everything, walls, birds, roosts, and change the bedding. It is inexpensive. $8 or so at TSC but that will make gallons of the spray.

Seven is the brand name. It comes in a red package w/yellow lettering.
Some people might say it'll kill you, but my dad used it all over the cats and dogs for fleas (before there was such a thing as Frontline) all the time I was growing up, and I'm still here. I have also used it on my dog to combat a *serious* flea infestation, but I don't routinely dust her like my dad did coz we do have better options now.
I have used it on white lice on my birds and it seemed to have worked.
It can be used on tomato plants and such, so it's usually sold in the gardening section (in my experience).

I have a lot more confidence in the safety of Seven dust than I do in permethrin spray, just coz I've grown up around it.
I *did* ask about Frontline spray for my birds, and nowhere sold it.

The only thing about Sevin dust is treating the walls of the coop and the chances of them inhaling too much of it. I do agree with Tala about the safety of it. We used it a lot too on our animals when I was growing up. I just worry about using it on my birds because their lungs are so sensitive. The permethrin worked like a charm for DD's flock when they had mites. No recurrence of the infestation either.

That's the right brand, but isn't that a hose sprayer? I wonder what dillution you would have to use for individual birds
