thats funny, My brother that I paid $70 for at walmart has lasted me 10+ years, starts off as fast or as slow as you want it, that depends on how hard you press the pedal, and has a metal bobbin.
I use it a lot, I have made halloween costumes every year for the last 10+, clothing for DD, about 60 simple block quilts (I am talking really simple here) I have altered clothing, sewed jeans (hemmed them) and made a jean quilt.

I use good quality thread, and needles... but the reason I think I have the most success with mine is I maintain it, after every use/project I blow out the bobbin area with a can of compressed air

I used to sell sewing machines & teach sewing classes at a Viking center in a local JoAnns. That had to be one of my favorate jobs. I got to do what I loved at work, and I never ran out of supplies.

Start out with a simple machine. Everyone's right, for your first one go for a cheeper machine. After sewing for a while you'll find out what you want it for and what you need. What you should spend money on is a good sewing book. Vogue has a great one. I would tell you the title but it seems my sister hasn't returned it yet...

Good Luck & Enjoy

I'm guessing it is because you purchased it so long ago. Maybe it was built better back then...???? Just trying to help out and glad you haven't had any troubles with your Brother. I'm not bashing any machines here at all.... just trying to help out cuz I have experience working with a wide variety of machines. And yes... maintenance is VERY important. Like pulling the thread back through the machine when you want to change colors.... don't do that either. That's a great way to gum up your machine and break plastic drive gears. I've seen that too.

I have a spare Bernina... yes I know they're normally expensive... but I found one for 100 (it's an oldie but goodie... just a regular machine no bells no whistles). So they're out there. Hang in there... patience will be your best asset.
I love to sew
