We are attempting to hatch birds from our first flock. We have a rir rooster. Delaware hens, barred rock, rir & New Hampshire hens.

We understand all of these will create a red or black sex link with the rir rooster and rir hen will obviously be a rir. However what happens then when we breed the sex link birds? Does production drop off on the 2nd & 3rd gen generation? What do people cross sex link roosters with as well?

Breeding sex links together losing the sex linkage.
Production should still be okay.

ok so simply when bred you are not aware of what sex they are. However then for what purpose do people use a sex link rooster? if any? sorry if this is a dumb question

Well, breeding maybe.
Mostly they are meat.

ok that is ultimately what i'm looking for will they hatch as well. we are not worried on the sexing part as much as our kids just enjoy it and then we give away whatever we don't want.
