I read that red sex link chickens are superior layers. True?, and, What is the difference between them and gold or black sex link chickens?

The difference is what breeds were used to make the sex links. I don't have any sex links so can not comment on their egg laying abilities.

Hi Teacher,

some folks divide the sexlinks into two categories...red and black (they call the golds red)

Black sexlinks are a Rhode Island Red rooster and a Barred Plymouth Rock hen.

Here is a hatchery link that has some background information on all the sexlinks and differentiates between them.

I think that there are definite differences......not just red and black...golds are AWESOMe......IMO the gold sexlink is an amazing chicken. Mine was I believe a Rhode Island Red rooster and a Rhode Island White hen. The bird was friendly, docile, an easy keeper, produced a daily jumbo or extra large egg. Everything a backyard chicken owner would want ---

Here's the link....

click on the particular sexlink and they explain the parentage....for example a red sexlink (aka red star) is a RIR male and a Delaware female..the gold sexlink is as described above (RIR m + RIW f) and the golden comet is a white rock female and a New Hampshire male....

some folks don't differentiate....but I appreciate the subtleties. :O)

The commercial egg industry uses nothing but various flavors of sex-links which should tell you something about their productivity.
