Hello all - Sunday, yesterday and today, our Easter Egger hen has hatched 7 of the 10 eggs she has been laying on.. Our chicks are a cross between a Buff Cochin rooster and Easter Egger hens. I thought I had read somewhere that you can determine the sex of chicks by whether they have just rooster traits or a combination of both his and the hen's. I know that is the case for some breeds, but is that reliable for all hybrids? If that is the case, we have almost all roosters! All have furry feet (yay!!!), one is pure yellow and the others are yellow with easter egger markings on their backs and heads. They are adorable, but I am hoping that at least half of them are hens!! Here is a photo I took yesterday.

Adorable! Rest assured, not all hybrids are sex-linked so not all can be sexed at hatch depending on which parent they seem to have inherited more traits from. In fact, most are not. The particular cross you have does not produce sex-links. So even though most of the chicks seem to have more traits from your rooster, that doesn't mean that most of them are roosters. Only some traits are sex-linked, and the ones that are noticeable at hatch are, as far as I know, all related to color. There are some other traits, like how fast the chicks feather in, that can be sex linked in certain breeds or lines, but once you cross those breeds or lines with another they usually loose those sex linked traits (at least in the first generation).
