I have a RIR male crossed with a Deleware females. What would there offspring be called ie red sexlink,golden comets or what?

Red Sex-Links. I crossed Delaware females with a Rhode Island Red male and all of the female chicks looked like Rhode Island Reds and the male chicks looked like Delawares. If you cross a Delaware male with Rhode Island Red females then all of the chicks, male and female, will look like the Delaware father.

The male chicks from the BR hens will be double barred, so you can sex them by lighter colors vs the hens. The roos from the WR hens will be single barred. IDK if the WR is dominant or recessive white and that makes a difference. If dominant, you will be able to tell those chicks easily because they will be yellow with some black markings, not black backs like the BR (from the ER chick down trait). If the white is recessive, all the chicks from the WR hens will be single barred black, males will look like the BR pullet chicks.

Since they are all single combed, you can likely sex them by comb growth in the timeframe for caponizing.

dheltzel-- I need a clarification " If dominant, you will be able to tell those chicks easily because they will be yellow with some black markings" was this meant for male and female and if not for female what would the female look like. Also- it looks like I have dominate white rock hens. Before I culled my roosters and locked down my mating pens I had 3 different flocks( of different ages) free ranging(BR-H,BR-R,RR-R,RR-H and WH-H ).To make a long story short the flocks roosters were doing double duty and the hens were laying in each other pens.I'm still learning.Any way- I hatched chicks last weekend and this past weekend. Out of the hatches I got chicks that look like BR and,RR. But I also got some all black(BSL-P),2 yellow with black marks ?,.rust colored with chipmunk marks(RSL-P) and light colored with chipmunk marks( RSL-C) . Again Tks

Dominant white is not sex-linked, so the chicks will all be white, with varying amounts of black, but the amount of black does not indicate the sex. You might even get some completely white, that does not guarantee homozygous dom white, the het state can does not suppress the extended black as well, but it can still suppress all the black on some chicks.

ok..so I have a small flock of rhodebars who I love.
but my mother would like to add a little veriety by adding a few hens of a different breed.
I would LOVE to be able to visually sex chicks at hatching (and put any males in the freezer.)
are there any breeds (or colors specifically) I could put in my little flock with my Rhodebar roo (other than more rhodebar hens) that might change up the color a little while still giving me some kind of sexlink.

mums fave breeds are:
buff orphingtons
speckled sussex
any of the laced wyandottes
brahma
Delaware
salmon faverolles
Columbian Wyandotte
cuckoo marans
barred rocks.


my other question is is there any way to make sex links using a mottled rooster?
I have a little mottled bantam cochin who needs a couple of girlfrineds LOL, sexlink chicks would be nice lol

With a barred roo (as the RB is), you cannot get black sexlinks. IDK if you put him over a silver hen, like a Delaware, if you would get red sexlinks, but I think you might. I would be very interested in the outcome of that cross.

It might be possible to retain the autosexing if you use another autosexing breed, like a CCL. I'm currently crossing a CCL to RB hens to see if I get an autoesexable chick that lays green eggs.

The BM cochin roo is black, plus the recessive mottled gene, so you could create black sexlinks with any barred or cuckoo hen. The mottling will not show in the progeny because it is recessive. I find the white head spot in some of these "non-standard" black sexlinks to be indistinct, so I wait 4 - 5 days to look for evidence of barring on the tips of the wing feathers, just something to keep in mind, generally if they have white, either a headspot or tips of their first feathers, they are males, but the absence of a headspot is not sure proof of a female, check the first feathers also.

I don’t know what the Rhodebar is based on at the E locus or anything much else about them genetically, but I don’t know why you wouldn’t get a nice red sex link with a Rhodebar male over a Delaware hen. The photos I’ve seen sure look like he is gold based, not silver. I’ve used a Speckled Sussex male over a Delaware hen and got some real clear red sex links. A red mottled chicken over a silver hen should work for a red sex link. As you said, a black mottled over a barred hen should work. But yes, the trick is seeing the red/yellow or spot in the down. With my SS over Delaware there was no question.

Out of that list, I’d think the Columbian Wyandotte is another good candidate for red sex links. Silver Laced Wyandottes are also a real good candidate for the hen. Aren’t Cinnamon Queens red sex links made with a RIR male over a SLW hen?
