Sex- linked Information

Ok... So I can't breed a sex link to a rir rooster and get a sex link. If I breed a sex link with a rir rooster... Can i feather sex? Will that fast feathering K (?) gene still exist?

You will get chicks of different colors. The females will still be good layers and the males go to the freezer.

Wow, I did not realize how much I did not know about all of this. I am beginning to get the idea that I am quite the novice when I thought I was fairly knowledgeable.

Genetics are hard, aren't they? Took me so many weeks and months of studying before I started to honestly understand what was being said. And even now I imagine I know only a fraction of what there is to know.

I think that's part of raising chickens in general. Even people who've been seriously keeping and breeding for DECADES will tell you they learn new things all the time. For me that's hard to even imagine - people who've been studying the subject for four, five, six, seven, heck even eight times as long as I have... and they're still learning as much as I do every day.

Yeah, the more I learn the less I know. The basics of sex linked genes aren’t hard. The hen has a dominate sex linked gene, the rooster is pure for the matching recessive gene. But you have to be able to see that difference at hatch.

There are exceptions to everything, sometimes multiple exceptions. There is often a huge difference in knowing something and being able to apply it. You are not just talking about one gene or gene pair, you are often talking about the interaction of several different genes. There are different ways to make certain colors or patterns so often you cannot tell which genes are actually involved by looking or even knowing which breeds are involved. It gets complicated in a hurry when you try to apply that knowledge.

I’m a long way from an expert but it’s fun to try.

Yeah, if and when I go to college, I am going to look and see if there are any poultry science/genetics courses. It is difficult to learn, but so fascinating.

Not all schools offer poultry courses. A young friend of mine is in a poultry program at University of Florida.
