Sex- linked Information

Is there only one way to make a certain sex link such as the red sex link?

I had no idea that I was making black sex-links when I crossed my Pita Pinta cockerel with my Cream Legbar girls. When I hatched their eggs, I was hoping for green egg layers. I kept having chicks start to get barring. I have one Barred Rock hen and I thought that I must be accidentally hatching her eggs along with my pure Pita Pinta eggs. That thought worked when I only had one barred chick in a hatch but when I purposely hatched a bunch of blue eggs and ended up with several barred chicks, I knew something was up! Now I have a bunch of barred boys running around. They are living the good life until they get old enough for freezer camp.

Deb says they will be tastey. This is good news for me. You unwittingly proved something I was wondering about. Will my OE Crele Pene over CL pass her barring on to her boys when covered by a NH boy. Looks like that would be a yes!

Going to donate a few of her eggs to a class incubation project and see what happens

It was good to hear her say that CLs are tasty. Ron says Pita Pintas are excellent for meat so the cross should be good. Here is a pic of one of the faux "Barred Rock" chicks.

Red Sexlinks are Done using Wheaten, and Red Sexlinks Can Only be used if the "Gold" side of the parent(Rooster) is a RIR, rooster, using a New Hamphire would be risking it and using a gold based wheaten like Wheaten maran would be impossible to sex...

most RedSexlinks are created by using RIR x Delaware or RIR x RIW... now if you were to take the RIR and instead use New Hampshire, this will make things somewhat harder as NH chicks are not as dark colored as RIR, now if we use other wheaten breeds like Wheaten Marans, wheaten OEG or Buff Orp roosters we could NOT be able to sex them because their chick down color is yellow/cream just like silver wheaten chicks..

There are a variety of ways:

Columbian rooster (Delaware or Lit Sussex for example) over a Red hen...RIR or NH

Red Rooster (NH, RIR, Welsummer) over silver girl (Delaware, Siver Grey Dorking, Silver Penciled Rock)
