Sex- linked Information

The sex linkage part does not effect egg color. Cuckoo Marans, especially hatchery birds, rend to have lighter eggs than the black coppers, so that may lose you some depth of color. It will basically be a blend of the parent stock. Start with the darkest genetics you have available.

Anyone know: could I use a Cuckoo or golden Cuckoo Marans hen x a blue, blue wheaten, or wheaten Ameracauna? It sounds like you can use almost any male so long as they are not white or barred in the black sex link cross? Thanks for reading!

Blue will work. Not positive if the golden cuckoo hen and a Wheaton rooster would work or not. In theory the barring would still indicate male, but in reality the chick down needs to be dark enough to see the headshot. I hatched out splash sex links and it was useless, I could not see the headspot clearly. The Wheaton genetics with the gold hen may have some of the same issues.

I don't think so. I just hatched out some chicks from a Blue Wheaten roo over a Birchen crossbreds hen. The chicks were all black, blue, or deep deep red-brown (which was what the hen looked like as a baby chick).

My intent wasn't sex link babies though. I'm just trying to get Birchen and blue Birchen chicks. I love the Birchen color.

Next cross for her is one of my Naked Neck Roosters.

I don't think the birchen hen will work, I believe the genetics are wrong.

Golden cuckoo is too light of a chick color but the striped chick pattern of the Legbar should provide enough chick color to see the head spots . Girls could show small head spots but should be easy enough to sex .

No auto sexing on the Marans hens in this cross . All chicks will be barred . Males single barred and females can only be single barred . No real difference in the head spot . You need barred hens and a non barred male to make them sex linked and barring on both parents to sex by head spot size .

You can not use your CCL rooster for any sex linked cross. For autosexing I'm pretty sure you need to put him with another autosexing breed. Autosexing works on a combo of sex linked barring and wild type down in the chicks.
