Sex- linked Information

I'm thinking you're going to get some pretty hens from that cross. I'm a sucker for blue birds, and the Wheaton parent should contribute some interesting color leakage on the neck/chest of the hens. If you have nice dark egg genetics to start with, you should get a nice rich colored olive egg.

That's what I'm hoping for! If you know of anyone with very dark egg laying French Silver Cuckoo Marans I would be very interested! Having a very tough time finding some. I'm very picky! Thanks for the help.

Historically the Fugate strain of Cuckoo Marans laid the darkest eggs. Last time I looked around the Net there was at least one person ( eastern US ) who still had pure Fugate Marans.
Might want to try here. Ripley is another time-honored strain.

I purchased 5 New Hampshire red roosters and 10 white Plymouth Rock hens. Because of predators I'm down to 1 roo and 8 hens. I'm trying to produce golden sex links. But when the chicks hatched they were all barred. Does any one have any suggestion to wether the problem is with the genes of the roo or the wrong breed hen? I Waited over 6 months for the hens to start laying only to find they don't produce that golden color I was hopping for.

If you read the very first post in this thread you will find this statement.

* White Wyandottes and *White Plymouth Rocks are not a good choice. They sometimes have the correct genotype to produce sex linked chicks and at other times, they do not have the correct genotype to produce sex linked chicks.

The problem is that there are different ways to make white. This does not necessarily involve Silver which is needed to make red sex links. Solid white hens may or may not be OK to make sex links. From what you wrote, the hens do not have the right genetics. The New Hampshire rooster should work fine with the right hens.

These were created with a RIR male and RIW females. I have both Rose Comb and Single Comb. I'm working on another breeding project. I have also use a RIR male with Delaware females. The female chicks looked just like the RIR father and the male chicks looked like the Delaware mothers.














The white chicks are the male chicks.

Thanks, I did read it I just thought the odds with 8 hen and 1 roo I would of ended up with at least one of them that was a sex link. Unless it was there was a problem with my roo. Now I wish I would of found this link before I purchased my hens. I guess I should have done more homework. ( measure twice, cut once lol). Is there a hen breed that he has listed that you recommend?

I have both a golden laced polish rooster and a Delaware hen, will those two crossed make a red sex link?

Next year I'd like to cross a Ark Blue Ro over California Gray(productive white egg layer) and also Barred Rock and get Black sex-linked chicks. Will this work?

Yes if you use barred hens and a non barred rooster .
