Im not sure if anyone has asked this yet but is there any breed that is for sure a silver gene bird or do you have to just test each white hen before using them to make red sex links?

If you look at the very first post in this thread you will see a chart that shows what hens can be used to make red sex links. But there is also a warning in there, a solid white hen is not a good choice. You do not need Silver to make a solid white hen. You don’t know for sure if a solid white hen has silver. You don’t know if she has dominant white or recessive white. You also don’t know what is hiding under that white. There could easily be something that would prevent you making a chick that can be sexed at hatch.

So avoid the solid white hens. Any of them on the list that are not solid white should be fine.

Yes, as long as you use the right rooster from the left of the chart.

Thanks, I am loving this cross. In the future, I would love a barred Cochin to make more feathery sex links. I also like how the Cochin adds more size to the boys that will head to freezer camp.

Same barring gene . So yes . Barring can be with many different colors . The only other barring is like in Campine . That kind is not sex linked and will not work .

Yes, it is. If you put an extended black too over a RB hen, you will get black sexlinks. If you put an autosexing breed, like a Legbar or Bielefelder over an RB hen you get autosexing chicks. In both cases, the males have white headspots, the main difference is whether the pullets are solid black or crele (brown with barring).
