Sex- linked Information

I think it is appropriate for this thread. It gives us a chance to explain how sex linking does not work, not just how it does. And it shows the importance of the male being pure for the gene in question.

I was reading in a different thread here, and someone mentioned that I could put my cream legbar over my silver carrying hens (Silver Laced Wyandotte or Barred Rocks) to make Red sex links. Is this true?

Everything I can find says that the cream legbar is based on silver, not gold, so you cannot use a CLB rooster to make a red sex link. Since the CLB is barred, you cannot use a CLB rooster to make a black sex link.

So no, it is not true.

CCLs are based on gold.
They are gold duckwing(wildtype) with barring and creme.
There are silver legbars that are based on silver but they're not crested and dont lay blue eggs.
Same with gold legbars. They are gold based without crests and don't lay blue eggs.

They will produce sex links but it will be a matter of whether the chicks pattern will show the difference.
CCL (gold) over barred rock (silver) would be the right combination but the barred rocks extended black is dominate so chicks will hatch black barred (black with head spot.)
They won't have a down pattern that would show the gold or silver.

Thanks for that correction. So with the Silver Laced Wyandottes you should get red sex links. But since you will not be able to see it in the down color with the barred rocks it will not work. I'm not sure all barred rocks are based on silver anyway.

Well if it produces a sex link, the barred rocks, similar to using my RIR over them, will produce a black chick with a dot on the head for the males, correct? or possibly not..?

I haven't had any issues producing black sex links from my RIR over my Barred Plymouth Rocks - it is in the list on the first page that they are silver gene.


I just didn't see Cream Legbars listed, so wanted to be sure. At any rate I am quite happy. (it was kinda a happy mistake.)

The cream legbar rooster has barring. The barred rock hen has barring. Therefore all the offspring, male and female, will have the spot since they are all barred. Since the males have two copies of the barred gene and the pullets only have one the spot should be a bit larger on the males, but that's not as reliable as a regular black sex link.

To make a black sex link the female has to be barred and the male cannot be. You don't have that situation with the CLB rooster, he is barred. A RIR rooster is not barred so black sex link works with a barred rock hen.
