Thanks... I need to learn chicken math! LOL I was planning on hatching my own mix.... Buff Orp roosters over Golden Comet (sexlink) hens... I hatched ONE chick this fall and she is amazing! She started to lay at exactly 18 weeks! But now I want to order some Wyandottes and.... ITH INK WE NEED A BIGGER COOP! LOL... JK That would NEVER work. I have to confine it to the one that I have...

Where are you planning on getting your Wyandottes from ? Dont get them from Privett what ever you do, I ordered SLWs, BOs, and RIWs from Privett and the SLWs were like 9 months old and still hadnt started laying so I sold them. Not to mention the snotty people who work at Privett.

Yea.... I get them through my feed store, who gets them from Mt Healthy... Anybody have some form there?

ETA: I don't want show quality... just birds that lay and might be half-decent broodies... Also, how is the coloring?

Ryan,

Excellent question.

Clint, keep up the good work.

I am sure you have figured out the answer to the question.

Most commercial red sex linked crosses use dominant white as a part of the cross therefore the statement about " not using (red) sex linked males with any variety of female".

If I said you could use a red sex linked male x barred female then I would have to explain when a person could do the cross and when a person could not do the cross.

I have found that it is much easier to say you can not use sex linked birds to make sex linked chicks. Explaining the exception may muddy the waters.

I was hoping that individuals would PM me with specific questions about things that may seem possible or things they do not understand. I figure if you are smart enough to come up with a good question- I will take the time to give you an explanation. I will then post the question and answer at the end of the article.

Thats understandable as it seems it was a long enough post to write without the exceptions lol. But since I wrote out the exceptions, you are welcome to copy any of it an paste it in your original post somewhere if you want. I learned most of the basic stuff from you anyway, its just really easy for me to soak it all in and apply it to bigger situations.

Yes. Buff, Red, or Partridge Silkie males with any Silver breed hen you want will make Red sexlinks.

Most any color Silkie other than Cuckoos, with any Barred/Cuckoo hen you want will make Black Sexlinks

i havent read every page, but my question is not so much the coloration of the feathers but the production of using sexlink birds as brood fowl..

how well will the offspring from a red sex link hen....i.e. golden comets and ISA browns crossed with a pure RIR rooster do? will they have the laying potential/ability of the red sex link hen parent stock? or is it best not to go this route and stay with hatchery bought sexlink pullets?

the local SOUTHERN STATES sells a regionally raised 16 wk started pullet that is 1/2 black sex link X RIR roo. they are popular to buy at $7 apiece but do they have the ability to lay as well as the original BSL hen? i have yet talked personally with anyone that has used them for a few yrs to get an accurate accounting for their performance.

any info would be GREATLY appreciated.

a buddy of mine did an experiment. he has a red comet roo. (white colored) om with red comet hens. i hatched a couple dz for him, and the pullets came out looking like red comets, and solid white. the cockerals did the same. but only a couple whites and mostly red in color. they have just started laying and are doing well even in this bad winter, and he has no artificial light on them. but we havent had any bred this way to know how they will produce in comparison to regular hatchery bought red comets.
