No, both males and females will have a white spot on their head. However, a trained eye can sex them by the size and how "blurry" the spot is.

Yep, both sexes will have head spots and it does take some eye training like minnesotachickenbreeders said. But here is how to sex pure barred chicks.

I just hatched 12 eggs and I think my Barred Rock Roo fathered most of them. Some were from BR hens, but others were sex-links or SLW....here is some pics, could anyone tell me what I have?

The black ones with single combs are the pure barred rocks. The ones with Rose Combs are from the SLWs but they will be barred too for the most part. And the White ones are from the Sexlink hens becuase they got the Dominant White that the Sexlink hens carry.... but wait they would only have one copy of dom white from so half of their chicks wouldnt get it so some of the Single combed Barred ones can be from the Sexlink hens too.

But the Barred males that arent pure Barred Rock will only have one copy of barring like hens so the sexing method I posted above wont help you since some of yours are mixed.

Thank you very much rareroo..Those pics helped allot. It is hard to tell them apart. Unless you have them side by side.
I notice the males have lighter down near there back ends. I hope you didnt mind i saved your pics for later use.

Sometimes it can still be difficult to tell since girls and boys have a yellow spot on the head boys normally have a bigger spot and as the boys feather they are lighter colored than the pullets so by the time they are a month old you know

This thread is fascinating, but very confusing to my pea brain, LOL
I bought 3 black sex link chicks at TSC, what kind of chickens are used to make the Bl. sexlinks? just trying to figure out what size birds these are gonna be? they appear smaller in size than my other chicks, which are CW, BR, SLW, BLW, SS, BO, and Delawares, and some white mystery chicks that I did not order? if they lay eggs is all I really care about, I bought sexed pullets I guess. I have a variety flock that I could care less what rooster covers what hens, ect. Not into breeding, but what stock might make A table bird or a layer depending on sex. All my extra roo's each year will be freezer fair. all my hens will be layers, and every other year I will order replacements to rotate the flock with new blood. Is it better to just get a different Roo, as well? so confused. and if so what breed of Roo would give Sex linked chicks over the breeds I have ? Ty Kim
