Sex-links do not live long?????

Mine was my favorite hen, I bought her as a started pullet. She was an egg laying machine, unfortunately for her. She became an internal layer, and died of it.

That being said, she was sweet. And I would have one again, but I would need to start her myself to control the growth and prolong her life and laying career.

It tends to be the commercial hybrids which have been developed to be small birds (eat less) laying very large eggs which have the most trouble with laying issues, prolapse, internal laying etc.

we have six red sex links, which we got as days old chicks - they are very sweet and hysterically funny to watch. They lay eggs like champs and we adore them!

We got 3 black sex links 5 years ago. We lost one last Christmas to a neighbor's dog and another to a fox. If it weren't for predators I'm sure we'd still have all 3. The remaining one is still one of my best layers and she also produces the largest egg of any of my hens. She's always been quite healthy and I don't see why she won't live another 5 years.

I didn't think I'd like my sex-links either. I thought they looked "boring" compared to the others. However, they are definitely my friendliest birds, and plan on getting more in the future! I LOVE them!
