Sexing a 4wk old SL Wyandotte

We had a vent-sexed, gold-laced Wyandotte that turned out to be a rooster. I just looked back at some photos of him from around three or four weeks, and it seems to me that his comb was wider at the base than your chick's comb is (more of a teardrop shape). Also, your chick has a more fully feathered head than our boy had at that age, and her gaze is a lot softer than his was.

I vote girl. Good luck

You're positive she's a girl as in she's a laying hen? Gosh I sure hope so.

Katy - Thank you. Is it at all possible for gals to have a red comb at that age? Featherz says her female was red in a week?

I've never had a wyandotte who was that red that young that wasn't a roo......and I've raised a lot of them the last 5+years.
Anything is possible, but I wouldn't get your hopes up that it's a girl.

Thanks Katy, trying not to get my hopes up, but boy it's hard! That's what I get for picking out the "girl" that seemed the most curious about the hands reaching in....

Hmmm interesting. Even without having a male comparison, I'm going to go home and examine her more closely, maybe post some more pictures. She seems like she's feathering out really nicely, in line with the other two. Guess we shall see.

Thank you! I'm just hoping she a tom-boy. LOL. Yesterday we had the babies out in a 'playpen'... and the SLW was the one who wanted to sit on my shoulder and peck at my eyelashes. The other two just wanted to cuddle. Eeep.

Here's my thread, with the conclusion at the end. yes, she's a laying hen.

Of course, yours may still be a boy, just wait and see!

I kept thinking she was just getting her comb pecked since it went pink at week 1, but when it was fully pink at 3 weeks I posted that thread. Wait and make sure to update what happens.

Ok here's a few more pics. I tried to get some good shots of the feathers on her back - they look "Rounded" to me, if that is what it means when the end of the feathers is squared off instead of pointy.
