Sexing a blue laced red single comb wyandotte

Here's an updated photo on birdfriend, now 3 months old. I'm still thinking roo but wondering about the coloring. Is it common for blrw boys to have lighter orange chests like my dude?

I think that's a pullet... I could be wrong, but I'm not seeing any solid colored shoulders. And yes, poorly-laced birds (when compared to "show-quality birds) are fairly common with hatchery stock.

He or she definitely has some ladylike behaviors. Good to know about the color. It's very funny looking in person, almost like it's wearing a vest. Is it because hatcheries breed less quality/distinctive birds together? Or they have a higher likelihood of accidentally mixing breeds?

Hatcheries breed for quantity versus quality. Also, technically while the bird in question is a Blue-laced Red Wyandotte, it's actually a 'splash'. This happens because the bird received two copies of the blue gene, one from each parent, resulting in splash. A true 'blue' would have one blue gene and one black gene. While a 'black' will lack both blue genes.
