Sexing barred Rocks based on leg color?

You cannot sex barred rocks by leg color. You must take into account the color of the down, size & shape of the head spot, AND the leg color to accurately sex barred rock chicks.

Females would have dark black down, small and well defined head spot, and a dark wash down the legs, BUT males can have this too. Fred's photo is a GREAT example of the differences in barred rock chicks.

True. Hate to burst anyone's bubble, but males often have some dark on the legs, though it's rarely as dark as some pullets'. However, some pullets have very little or none. You cannot, I repeat, CANNOT, sex a BR solely on the leg color.

You also cannot sex a BR solely on head spot or down color, either. You must take all three traits into consideration, and even then, you can still make a mistake, as it's not 100% accurate.

Stone_family, did u find the othe 2 were roo's and that's why you only have one left? And is she chick #1 in your pictures?

Yes it was the very first chick pictured. Yes the other two were looking more rooish then she was. They had pink combs at 3 ish weeks and stood differently.

The chicks I've had with any wash on the legs have been pullets, but I have only raised a few...

Please help! We have 5 barred rocks that we ordered from McMurray hatchery. Supposed to all be female. My son chose one favorite right away that he plans to show in 4h. The worry is that the one he chose has a large white blotch on head, almost all yellow beak, and much more white in the feathering. They are 2.5 weeks. But........the legs are very dark. It's a mystery chick. Definitely the most beautiful, but I'm worried she may be a he. I will upload pics this evening. Thanks for any tips! This is our first bunch of chicks!
