Sexing Barred Rocks

Pics

This picture is from the Good Shepard thread on here and are true Plymouth Barred Rocks. Don't they make you drool? I think they come from a gentleman named Jeremy? But you should check that out to be sure...just want to give correct credit for these birds.

Our poor little hatchery chicks will not be near as beautiful as these are...I soooo want to breed these and the Dom's!!!

My BR is 5-6 weeks old

We got a box full of chicks out of Jeremy Whippe's line over a year ago. Jwhip on BYC. He and Kathy Bonham of MO got them into a few people's hands. They are incredible birds, to be sure.

They are amazing birds. How do I get my hands on some for next year? I am getting 6 Dom's next March, would love to have a few of these too, maybe four? to start out? Thanks for any info!!! My jaw just dropped when I saw them. I read through most of that thread. Stayed up way late as I had a hard time tearing myself away from it

I really really would love to get into the preservation of this line!!! If you have any info, could you please PM me? Thanks so much! Laurie/Mithious

PS, I would NOT be cross breeding them with the hatchery line or the Dom's. Getting the Dom's to start a separate breeding line with them. Got the hatchery chicks, just to get back into chicks, as I was way late starting out this year and am not going to breed the hatchery ones. I decided that, when I decided to get the Dominiques. I have plenty of space and can add on, as needed, for separate pens, ect. I don't want to be a big time operation, but would like to expand a bit for myself, and maybe show a few???? Not sure on the showing part yet though! Still drooling

I have a fairly good handle on good animal husbandry also!

There are two threads here on BYC where breeders of these birds hang out. (including me. LOL)

The Heritage Large Fowl Thread and the Good Shepherd Barred Rocks thread.

On these threads you'll meet over a dozen folks who have this line. The breeding season is mostly over, as the heat of summer is upon us. But, it wouldn't hurt to see if someone has excess stock or culls they'd be willing to sell. Not a lot of folks have eggs that they will ship as the PO is really hard on them.

Frank Reese of Good Shepherd Poultry Ranch and Jeremy Whippel (jwhip) XW Poultry have great birds, in sufficient number to sell. I honestly don't know if either would have stock to sell this time of year, but worth asking. If nothing else, get on a waiting list.

Will definitely check out the Large Fowl Thread also! Thanks so much for the heads up. Would be looking for spring though. Our winters are too tough here, to start birds in the fall! I really wouldn't be interested in the culls...I would like live chicks if possible, but will do eggs if I can get one of these hatchery birds to go broody next spring. I have heard that is hard with the hatchery ones??? If I don't get one or two out of the hatchery chicks to go broody, then eggs in the spring would be fine but if not, I am on a waiting list for 6 Dom's ( straight run ) next March, from right here in NH and will pick them up when they are ready. If I DON'T get any hatchery chicks to go broody next spring, sigh, I will have to wait another year, if I can only get eggs, and wait for the Dom's to go broody, which would mean another year to wait on the BR's. The Dom's are known to go broody and are great moms. I don't have a bator, and really want to do this the natural way! It's wayyy eaiser to have momma chicken take care of the chicks! I will not, and can not, do this again in my little cabin!!!

Thanks again for the info. Would you mind another PM to me on if you do chicks in the spring? I am so excited to start this. Waiting is hard, but well worth it! IMHO

There is a list, somewhere on here. Sorry, but I am just to tired from all that went on today to search it out tonight, but if you want, you can search it on the top search bar? I don't remember if it has a list of how correct they are on sexing them, but you could check out a few. Usually their websites will tell you how accurate they are. I went through Hoffman Hatchery in Penn. and was really happy with the health, sexing, and customer service and the overall quality of hatchery birds I got. They are doing great. Not in Texas. But I am in NH and they shipped on a Monday and I received them Wednesday morning!

Good luck and sorry for your not so great TSC sexing!
thanks for your info I will research that list
