It depends on the breed, the breeding, and the individual chick.

For example, Cochins generally tend to produce male chicks that will shoot up their little combs right away by 4 weeks. While Wyandottes are notoriously difficult to gender ID until 16 weeks.

And that can change if the breeder or hatchery is tinkering with the genetics of the line one way or another.

Then there's always the individual chicks that are the outliers. Your best bet is to post pics here and to read about your particular breed.
