Sexing eggs!

In that study, note the incubation and hatching temps and humidity...remember these are industrial cabinet incubators in a controlled environment, but it's still interesting:

I am only asking to try it!

If we debunk the myth then thats fine. Also a lot of people think its about long versus round eggs but the study says it is about pointy over non-pointy. There is a subtle difference.

My Copper marran (Karen) only lays short round eggs but even of those some are pointier than others. I have two columbines who lay a different sized and shape egg each day, its always a surprise but they are always pale blue at least!

Also, correct me if i'm wrong but chickens eggs are hard before they are laid, they dont harden over time. I know I have taken an egg directly from a vent before now and its been warm and wet but not soft.

The temperature is lower than I use but the humidity is the same.

Im not ruling it out 100% Im just saying the shape of the egg is created when the hen pushes it out because its still soft like dough, depending on how the push it out determines the shape as it hardens, the egg itself is already fertilized when that happens so I dont see how the two can be connected but I will leave the door open 1% lol.

Nope, sorry. The egg takes about 25 hours going through the hen's internal egg making factory. Most of that time is in the shell gland getting the hard shell laid on. It’s not even close to being soft like dough when it comes out. Calcium is hard. If you butchered laying hens you’d know that.

Just for fun, a supposed quote from The History of Animals by Aristotle in the fourth century BC.

"Long and pointed eggs are female; those that are round, or more rounded at the narrow end, are male."

Notice that somewhere in the last 2400 years the story has become twisted around.

I would absolutely love for you to teach me how to sex my eggs, but seriously, all of my marans eggs are fairly round, and all of my polish are very pointed

I...

I've cut eggs out of dead hens. They are hard. Calcium carbonate and phosphorus blended in the shell gland is hard.

I am starting to regret posting this now. People seem very adamant that its not true but all i'm asking is to see, if a lot of people try, what kind of percentages we get. If you dont want to do it then thats fine, no one is forcing you too.

No, I didn't mean to tear you down. I think it would be a fun thread, although I have my suspicions about the results. I will be setting 24 polish eggs next Wednesday, and all of those will be pointy, so I can give my results in a couple of months. I don't think anyone was being overly critical of you. I am a skeptic, and I challenge the other skeptics to accept the challenge

There's been other threads where egg shape has been the target of experiment to see if the old wives tale had any credence. I could have sworn lazygardener had done one not too long ago.

Thank you. It would be great if we could have some photos of the eggs too, and we will just wait and see
