Hi guys! :frow
I recently acquired these two pigeons from a farmer who was raising them for meat. They were only 2 dollars each!! I asked them if it was a male and female but the farmer was not too sure. Could anyone help me identify what sex these two are?

If they are getting along together well, you may have one of each. Then, you may get some newborns.
Regardless of breed,,,, you can still loft fly them in your yard. They will return back to your loft, if you homeset/train them well.
Then you can eventually loft fly/homeset the mom and dad.
If it gets to that point,,, we can explain how to do such.
2 females will also get along well. They may lay eggs,,, but those will not hatch for obvious reasons. (not fertile)
If you get into the joy of keeping pigeons,,,,,,,,,,, consider building a good size loft. and get more pigeons.

It’s hard to say :)

The white one seems to be a young bird, one year or less. You can tell because they have a fleshy colored cere (it turns white and flaky with age, like the red pigeon has) and the young birds also just have a certain look to them. The dark eye (compared to the red pigeon’s clearly defined pupil and iris) also is a young bird trait, though some white pigeons can have a dark colored or “bull eye”.

The red pigeon is an adult and definitely at least a year of age, but doesn’t look particularly young or old to me. If the red pigeon is docile and nice with the younger white one, the red is probably a hen. If the red is a male I would think you will probably see some male behaviors like strutting, cooing and “driving” (following the other bird around and pecking the back of the head) but they may need some time to settle in. Most male pigeons are not gentlemen, but it’s entirely possible you could have a docile and polite male also!

! thank you for the reply, since this post I’ve been feeding and keeping my pigeons in a pen, and the two pigeons would bicker a lot so i figured they were both males. I also bought a few more to keep them company, and at least one is a girl since i found an egg hehe
I’m wondering now what do I have to do to really homeset them?
And any advice on what a pigeon loft should look like, as I see a lot of different ones online and i’m a bit lost as to which one is best for them!

Thank you so much for the information!! They ended up fighting so i figure they’re both dudes 🤭 They were in fact not gentlemen after they got settled in
