sexing peachicks

Wow I wish there was an active general peafowl question & answer forum. Since this one is so active, I will post it here.

I thought peafowl pairs only mate once a year? My peahen had her brood of 4 back in June. She just showed up this morning with four more peachicks!! I am amazed and tickled to death, but thoroughly confused!

Hello, congratulations on the babies!
And...as we often say around here...Where are the pictures????

About a second brood, here's some previous discussion:

(the search function is actually very useful here, unlike on some other forums!)
Well, Princess Kate learns fast. I took her first brood away from her, and now she won't let me within 10 feet of her and her second brood. I don't have a camera with a good enough zoom!

She and my peacock Prince William (RIP, coyote got him last week), are both IBs, but her first brood was 3IB/1BS....and her second brood is 2IB/2BS.....genetics is pretty cool!

Thank you for the link!

got my new silver pied =)
pretty sure its a hen. well ok like 60% sure
the kids were not impressed with her.
but she fits right in. no fighting and she took treats from me hours after we brought her home.
also moved my purple chicks out to the shed.
the other 3 will stay inside until i find them a new home (hopefully)

hey guys, long time not type
frow.gif
been so bz, anyways

mmm???13 - mine chnaged voice too, they peeped at first, now they honk like geese almost.

country girl - your babies are getting so big!!! they look so healthy and happy, good job!!!

i still can't seem to upload pictures.... sry.

so i had a question. at what age does their color "spread" more? (if they're boys anyways). mine are all 11.5 weeks old now. midnight we know is a girl bs. i'm still uncertain about the other two, but they only have color on the back of their necks now which first showed up weeks ago... george has color on his head mostly in the eyebrow area, he's pied. houdini - silver pied - doesn't but his/her head is mostly white. if they were males shouldn't the color be spreading more by now? or does it wait till they're older? thanks

Sorry you lost your male but if you pull her chicks she may start laying again and they may be fertile if she was with the male, just saying you may be able to get another hatch from her if you wanted to try

What do you mean by colors spreading? If he's silver pied I think the pattern he has will stay like that forever. Unless I'm misunderstanding the question.

If you are talking about when they will get those gorgeous blue necks and dark chests, you are going to be waiting for a while. The males will not have their full colors until they are 2-3 years old. When they are yearlings they will be mostly brown with a mostly green-blue neck (it's blue, but it will look green most of the time) and by year two you will see the better blue coloration. Depending on your climate and when in the season your boys hatched, you may see the deeper blues set in by year two. In colder climates the scaling back feathers and eye feathers in the train may not come in until year three.

My blue male just turned two and is finally getting the black/dark chest area and scaled feathers with this autumn molt.

Sorry the question wasn't worded better. but ya thats what i meant Kedeevra. So do the
girls ever get color in their crowns? because George/a now has color in the new crown feathers and around the front of the neck. Houdini/a doesn't have color in the crown and is all white in the front of the neck so can't tell there :) i wish i could get picts to upload. sorry. my phone isn't sharing and my camera broke :(

and the top of Georges head is all color now, not just the eyebrow area, amazing how dif they look if you go in with them and hold them. :)
