sexing peachicks

piper is still such a little parrot.
whenever i pick her up she refuses to let me hold her around her body she incists on sitting on my wrist or hand.
the others are all content to be picked up around their bodies.

on the pied is the color of the flight feathers still an indication of the gender?
if so both are male.
they have burnt orang colored feathers mixed in with their white down at the bottom of their wings

Theres a few not so great pics a few posts back. I will try to get etter ones this weekend.

well i knew it would happen, i was told piper and poppy HAD to move to the shed =(
so today they made the big move of moving to a big bird house.
their 2 new pals (the pieds) made the move 2.
they got lots and lots of treats once they settled down.
the itty bitty babies moved to the big dog kennel.
&still no luck getting my hands on a cameo chick!

the pics arent the best because they were super jumpy.

tomarrow i am going to try to get good pics of the pieds.
the chicks have really unique markings on their face.
for the chick on the right im thinkin the name eclipse fits (he has just the outline of a shape on his forehead)

Always tough to move them out of the house! I know I hated not having them in my business inside... but I can't say I missed the by-product of their visits! Less things pooped on, less things knocked over. Ah, you'll still get to see plenty of them :)

it will just be weird not being greeted by pipers call everytime i walk out the door.
she always has to know what mom is doing.
by far lately her favorite is egg yolk.
today i opened the door as opposed to feeding thru the wire and the little hog came out the door and tried to get in the bag herself while everyone else was eating out of my hand.
(this was before the move.)

the itty bitties are also warming up to treats (as are the pieds)

How? At what age?

Around 2.5-3 months of age, they begin a (slow) full molt. Prior to this, both genders will have barred feathers covering their bodies, which they will drop at this time. Males will grow in new barred feathers, where females will start growing in solid colored feathers (or at the very least, feathers with LESS barring, usually just a black tip if it's still present at all). The first few times I swear I couldn't have told you the difference if my life depended upon it, but now it's so obvious most of the time I wonder how anyone can miss it; I think it just needs a couple chances to click.

Here is one of my males at 2.5-3 months ish (for some reason it won't let me post photos, I'll edit later but here's the link):

Here is one of my females at 2.5-3 months ish- notice how the stark black and brown barring is "less" and there's more solid colors at the base of the feathers for the girl?
