sexing silkies

Ok, lol! First of all, I'm brand new to silkies so I know nothing about them other than they look an awful lot like my daughter's lionhead bunny. ^_^

We picked out three 3 day old silkie chicks at TSC on Mar 13th. So they're 2 weeks today give or take a day or so.

I have to try and get some decent pics of them but they're busy little things and don't sit still except when they're stretched out under the heat lamp and that's not a very accurate pic for sexing them.

Anyway, there are three of them, a white, a blue, and a partridge. White is bearded and blue and partridge are clean faced.

Both the white and blue have gotten a LOT of wing feathers in and blue has gotten some tail and back feathers and feathers just between wings and spine coming in already.

Partridge has very little feathering with just short wing feathers showing so far.

I have a feeling blue is male just because of the "look" of him. Seems to stand very tall, has much heavier and longer, out of proportion legs than the other two and is always charging the bantam Cochin they share their brooder with. Blue also just has a very "hard" "tough" "roosterish" looking face.

White I'm not sure of, but it's wings have feathered in like Blue's. No tail feathers or back feathers showing, however and doesn't have the same heavy, long legs and upright carriage. Both this one and Blue though, will try to nibble at everything that enters their brooder. I've been calling them Nom and Nommer because they are both real quick to bite anything and everything new in their environment.

I'm thinking Partridge is a pullet just because of her much smaller size, thin "dainty" looking legs, very low horizontal carriage and timidness. Though she could just be a runt I suppose and the timidness could be due to her smallness.

I did just grab them all and tried the toe idea. Blue's INNER toe is actually like a half a joint longer that the outer one. White and Partridge have even sized toes.

Tried it on the bantam Cochin and bantam Sumatra and D'Uccles. Cochin has inner toe longer. Sumatra has outer toe longer. D'uccles has both toes even in size.

So I guess I'm clueless and no help at all.

With silkies you can't tell the gender by how quickly they feather in and I have never heard of the toe length comparison that you are describing. You just need to wait until they get older to tell for sure. And enjoy them while they're so small - they will be adult size before you know it!

I'd never heard if sexing chicks by their toes either. Somebody mentioned it in this thread so I went downstairs and grabbed all of my chicks to test the theory. Doesn't seem to tell me much over that I've got a 50 percent chance of having pullets. ^_^
I guess I do just have to wait and see.

I'm guessing rooster. Any feedback? 7 weeks old.
