Sexing your Silkies (PICTURES AND TIPS - Updated July-5-12)

Clementine is a girl. She has light blue skin patch behind her beak which all my silkie hens have. The round head crest says pullet as well, cockerels head crests tend to go back rather than up and out and around. Pretty bird.

I thought all purebred silkies had that blue area on the earlobe. I knew about the crest differences, but is the earlobe color an indicator as well?

Anyone have a male to let us know?

I got a couple silkies I need help sexing. They are about 4 months old and are for show so they have a lot more fluff then my hatchery. There are two partridges, a buff and a black. I know the sex of my two adult silkies not sure about these. There is one that is about half the size of the rest of them and it’s the partridge looking at the camera the same time as the polish. It’s always been about half the size is it a runt or the only hen? “Pen is dirty cleaned it right after and moved them over”. Thank you everyone for the help I appreciate it.

Hi, i initially asked for some advice on my other thread about an aggressive silkie i got yesterday- i got all 4 birds yesterday.

However im questioning now whether it is a hen though. So i thought id better ask on this thread to see.

Do you think you can tell from the photo if its a hen/rooster?

From the picture it looks like a hen, but need a good picture or two if the comb to be able to tell better.

Thank you, i found out later on that she is a she after all

I went to check after she had been in the coop on her own and we had our first egg so she is a lady

So I have 2 silkies that are 5.5 weeks old and was wondering if anyone could see anything pointing to which gender . I know they are still very young but just curious .

Here are 3 of my 4 silkies. What do you think they are? No eggs yet but some definite crowing going on. Also, if the rooster tries that move where he shuffles over to me with his wing down, what does that mean? I assume dominance, I shoo him away.
