Sexlink Thread- Pictures and Discussion

Hi everyone.

I have a 'barred rock X black orpington' hen and a buff orpington rooster,

Out of them we have a bunch of chickens that look like the yellow coloured sex linked pictures on this thread - and another bunch that look like barred rocks but also ALL look like roos.

Does anyone know if they could be sexlinked with this combination?

Hello and WELCOME TO BYC !!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, If the hens parents were a Barred Rock ROOSTER and the mother was a Black Orp HEN and the the hens are barred themselfs, then yes when paired with a Buff Orp would look like the Sexlinks that I posted in the first page from the barred hens with a buff roo.

Hello, welcome to the thread! And

!! Glad you've found us. It's a great place.

After having a mixed flock for several years, I have to say that the red sex links have definitely won in the egg-laying category. Not only that, they are ridiculously friendly and are always underfoot. I plan to go strictly with sexlinks for my new laying flock, but am trying to determine whether to stick with all red, all black, or a mix of the two. I have no experience with black sex links, but I do have some general questions. Do they lay as well as the RSL? Are they as friendly and easier to manage?

I asked the rep at McMurray but all she could tell me is that the reds are far more popular.

That would depend on from what stock you get your Black Sexlinks from, from my experience, the black sexlinks I got from Welp Hatchery were pretty hot tempered with other hens for some reason. While the Red Sexlinks I got from Welp where better tempered. The BSs I bred from BOs and BRs are good layers and quiet tempered. As far as laying, that would also depend on the parent stock. My RSs from Welp laid slightly better than the BSs and have a smaller body.

I have 2 BSLs from unknown hatchery, got them free with feed purchase in early spring 09. They started laying late summer/early fall, eggs larger than my BR, BO, red and ee hens. I got an egg almost daily from each of them from then just until late this fall. One has finished molting and one is in the middle. They continued laying after my other hens had quit for the year, but the other hens are a year older, too. Truthfully, I don't see much difference in temperment between my different breeds, with the exception of the brown leghorn is pretty scatty. But I've been thrilled with the BSLs and plan to get more this year. Or, better yet, hatch out my own!

Thanks for the replies thus far. For some reason, I had it in my head that the BSL's were meaner - along the lines of what "minnesotachickenbreeder" had to say. Maybe I will go predominately with RSL and just a couple of BSL to try those out. I actually wanted to get the BSL over the RSL because I thought they might be less visible to predators which are in abundance here!
