Our newest Spring chicks are ISA's from Townline. Being fascinated with the whole genetics thing (medical biochemist by trade) I also bought 6 RIW from Privett this Spring.

(Word of warning about Privett...whenever I get sexed pullets from them I ALWAYS get some roos. This time I ordered 6 pullet chicks, got one roo in the bunch. Neighbor got 10 sexed pullets form them, 2 were roos. Last year I ordered 6 EE's from them and 1 was a roo.) And yes, their customer service is awful but that's where our feed store gets their chicks from. Not wanting to order lots of chicks each year I can at least jump into one of their orders if I agree to get what Privett sells.

That being said, we have a very nice dark RIR roo and I'm hoping to breed him to my new RIW girls next Spring. I always sell a bunch of chicks in the Spring and it is nice to know roos from pullets on day 1. And I will keep a few for myself in the Spring and see how they match up in egglaying to the patented ISA's. I love Townlines service and prices, so if my own do not measure up to my standards I will continue to purchase from Townline.

This past Spring I crossed the RIR roo with the 3 Privett delawares we have. I'm not terribly impressed with the delawares from the egglaying standpoint but they did make some nice sexlink chicks. I didn't keep any, but the chick customers were happy to have known pullets. Our delawares just haven't layed eggs to write home about, compared to the RIR hens we had in the past. The delaware eggs have been smaller and they were very inconsistent layers over the winter, again compared to the RIR's. I also crossed the RIR roo with a couple of BR hens to make black sexlinks. They were also easy to sex at hatch. But I have not had good luck with BR temperments so I didn't keep the chicks. In fact, my current BR hens are looking to be re-homed in the very near future as the ISA's start laying soon. The BR's will be the first to go as they are the most aggressive birds I've had. They feather pick the other girls and generally bully everyone around. I know that others have had great luck with BR's, but not here. Mine were given to me and I believe they came from Ideal.

Great thread idea!

Yep I also had a few roosters in my sexed pullets as well. I got Buff Orps, RIWs, and SLWs from them, the SLWs were terrible and took for ever to mature that I sold most of them before they even started becuase the others had been started for nearly two months and the SLWs hadnt. And the RIWs and some of the Buff Orps started out laying ok but then slowed down to almost nothing, but most all of my other hens have too, I have had the worst luck this year with everything, laying, hatching, chicks surviving.

Did your Dark RIR roo come from them or is he a breeder quality roo ? If he did come from them, do you have pics of him, the pics of the Dark RIRs on the website ( when it was running) looked almost black.

I have 13 sex link hens, from ideal. they started laying at 16 weeks about half of them. They are friendly like my easter eggers. The sex links lay everyday. They are one of my favorites.

I think I will add a few Golden Comets to my flock. I have 6 EE pullets who have been laying a few weeks. I get 4-6 eggs a day. I think I need a few more eggs a day.
