Both our sex links are from Orscheln after having great success with a BSL we purchased there. So, perhaps not the best breeding but they're our loving pets so were proud of them anyway

Scrappy was the first to start laying though she was laying in the front yard flower bed

But, she's settled down now that her wing is clipped. She is a real sweetheart and squats for me more than any other chicken. She's gone from our most hyper chicken to now liking to be picked up and petted (since she started laying). Hormones can do some strange things!....well it's a good change in this case.

Foxy is our smartest chicken. She is always watching what is going on around her....watching carefully for any treats or if any of the other girls has found something she might like to try. She's the first one to run to me when I come out with food. She's even learned if she jumps on my lap she can monopolize the treats for a time. She just doesn't like to be confined though. She just will not let me pick her up unless she's cornered. She's also the only one of the big girls that has never squatted for me....though I saw her squat for the head hen, Edna the australorp, the other day. Edna just gave her a .....and what do expect me to do with that look and wandered off. She has also gone from our ugliest chicken to rather handsome. Growing a large red comb and handsome head feathering. She was one of those BSLs with the reddish coloring when she hatched and I'm really not convinced she's necessarily a Rhode Island Red X Barred Rock cross. I'm thinking something else with a Barred Rock. She is our most reliable layer. She gives us a pullet egg first thing in the morning every morning. The others in the flock get later and later each day and miss a day eventually. She's just a champ....so its hard not to like her even though she's a bit mean to our Easter Eggers.

Beautiful birds! Those bsl's seem to come in the most gorgeous patterns.
I just set 14 sex link eggs yesterday. I'm wanting dark layers, so I have 3 cuckoo x wheaten marans, and 11 barred (possibly some blue) rocks x wheaten marans. I'm hoping for some really good, darker egg layers. Should be interesting!
And here is a picture of Ashley, my bsl from about 10 yrs ago. She was an awesome layer.
