I had a feeling something was going very wrong and shortly thereafter they covered the camera.

It is a rough evening for me-watching this and now I just received an email from my local newspaper that a 78-year-old gentleman I know is missing.

He and his wife are very simple, in fact, I used to think even mentally, but now I know better. They have been married for a lifetime and they do everything together. If something happens to him, she will not last long afterwards. They have one son who is a brain surgeon. Please pray that he will be found safely.

ETA: He has been found safely!!!

I've heard the minis have a higher mortality rate due to foaling than standard size horses. Becca, what happens with the tiny mares that causes them to die, is it normally due to a stuck foal? I can't imagine how terrible that must be for you owners...

it can be many different things.. a abnormally large foal which happens when the stallion is bred to a mare much smaller than him (example 31 inch tall mare bred to a 36 inch stallion) the mares pelvis may not be big enough to pass a foal.. the foals more commonly get sholder locked or hip locked... we had a mare 3 years ago that when pushing the foal out ended up also pushing out 2ft of her bowel. we lost both mare and foal that year.

many things can go wrong.. that is one of the main reasons you will see me check to make sure the foal is positioned right as soon as i get in the stall when the mare is pushing. the sooner u check the easier it is to correct a malpostion.

there just isntmuch room to maneuver with the minis as there is big horses... kinda like the difference in a big Boer goat doe and a pygmy doe...

Here is a picture that was posted on MareStare of Johannah and her colt. They said she pushed out 18" of her rectum.
