Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I don't see leaving them out on their own. Among other things, I love watching them. Also, the garden is big enough that there is nearly always something to do there. I nearly always have hawks or eagles in sight when I'm out (not just see them sometime during the day but usually can see at least one at any given time.)

I'm much more consistent with movements than sounds. They come to body language rather than sound now. I can try attaching sounds.

I was thinking pool noodles to help shoo them... fairly big diameter, bright colors, and light weight.
I must make a confession at this point  I have been known to grab a large hadfull of tail feather close to the bum and propel them up a ramp into a coop.:p

Find a treat they really like, tinned mackerel drained of any oil or brine often works and it's good for them.
Find a distinctive small containor and put the treat in the containor. Make a show of the containor to the chickens and give each chicken a bit of the treat. Go around each one making sure that they all get as near an equal share as you can.
Do this for a few days and the chickens will come to you when they see the containor.
This is what I do. I have a tiny bright yellow container small enough for my pocket.. They know it by sight now. I shake it and make a chicka-chicka-chicka sound before I throw the cracked corn or sunflower seeds out. I trained them with the sound in the run, so they know what it means. Now, when I let them in the garden, I rarely have to make the noise, most just follow me when they see me head toward the run. For a straggler here or there, shaking it or making the noise brings them in. I make sure everyone gets a little taste. Only took about a week or two to get them to know that following me in the run is a fantastic idea. 😂

I will never understand what great offence the chicken has given to local planners that they ban them from the neigbourhood.
The public generally, mistakenly, think that they are dirty and transmit disease. That's my understanding. 🙁

They are such sweet, smart, and loving creatures. They are full of life and they make me happy.

That will either be very fun or scare them to death 🤣.
With my younger flock, there was a day when we needed to get them in a barn and it did not go well, so we actually ended up getting really angry and chasing them with sticks (one of my ugly chicken moment). It was around Christmas and the rooster, Gaston, is still utterly terrified whenever he sees me with a stick in my hand.
