I still miss my old Nokia Brick. That phone went through the wars, it survived 5' drops to tile and concrete, full submersion in dishwater and the pool, and lasted years.

No IP68 water and dust proofing on that Nokia and if you're right (and I bet you are) it does better than modern smartphones.

My employer once issued me a BlackBerry for work purposes. What a freaking nightmare that thing was.

My favorite Ole Skool cell phone was a Samsung flip phone. Phone calls, texts, camera, email. It had an actual, physical keypad - little buttons that you pushed to make letters and numbers.

It wasn’t a literal smartphone, but I called it my Reasonably Intelligent phone, which it was.

I just got rid of my 2014 Nextel in Nov 2023. And that was because it wasn't able to get updates and none of the apps would work on it anymore .


I ran out to see if I could get the chickens to go in when I got an alert on my phone for a dust storm. We don't normally get dust storms.
It was coming from the center of the state. Most of the chickens ignored me

The news posted a video of in a town and that's about how it was here. Just trees instead of houses

Some massive storms blowing across the country tonight. Glad you are only getting the dust storms, that Tornado in St. Louis was massive. :-(

Four hours today, Sunny and warm.
I've read a few times people saying how much more peacefull their chickens are without a rooster. That's not what's happening at the field. Not only are they bickering a lot, the group forage configuration one might expect isn't really happening. It's not just Mow who wanders off; half the time I don't even know where Tull is and have to go an find her.
It wasn't like this when Henry was here.
For all I know they may be acting normally as a female only group having never cared for one before. I don't like it and I don't think the hens do either.

Are you going to go in search of an appropriate Rooster? I couldn't imagine life without the Roosters. We had an attempted Hawk attack again, today and the girls were all inside safe and sound, within seconds, thanks to the brave Roosters. One of the turkey poults had jumped over the fence, into the big turkey side, and Spud was running around trying to get her to take cover.

Hard to tell imho*. How do hens see a rooster? Maybe they like one who behaves but there are roosters who are not so nice either.
If the rooster was not a friendly chap, they are probably glad they are not bullied anymore. And in general the hens might like it they are no longer pushed to stay together all the time.

*Speaking for myself, not a chicken psychologist and not a Tate fan.

I'm still using a Nokia I bought in 2009

It's called dumb, but for someone who just wants a mobile phone, I think it's brilliant. Demonstrably robust, costs next to nothing on PAYG, battery lasts about two weeks if I forget to turn it off (and lasts months if I remember to turn it off), and untrackable. What's not to like? I do computer stuff on a desktop, where for me is where it belongs.

Are you going to go in search of an appropriate Rooster? I couldn't imagine life without the Roosters. I can imagine a life without a Rooster very well. Have to bc I live in a town. It’s great not to have a crowing rooster in a nearby coop at 5 am.

Cockerels who start to crow always have to go before spring/early sunrise. A no crow collar or a soundproof rooster coop is the only way I can keep one.

My hens never lived with a real rooster and do well without one. After something alarming has happened they stay together. But when everything seems safe, they tend to scatter and go their own way.

It surprised me the one chicken in the first run didn’t peck the girls red toe nails.

I don't know what to do for the best.
I can't quarantine. It's just not realistic at the field.
I could get a Light Sussex ccockerel from my friend and he has offered a cockerel with a Light Sussex pullet which might make Mow happier. Poor Mow stands out like a sore thumb against the predominant greys of Fret, Tull and Sylph.
I'm locked in a loop of indecision currently.
