Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Thought of Fret and Henry today. Raisin kept trying to duck under Stilton. Both adorable and odd. Stilton's face in this photo says it's more the latter 🧐

He was doing his best to ignore it. Eventually, Unquestioned and Unquestionable Highest and Most Illustrious Head Hen Brahma Donna stepped in to put an end to the nonsense, as seen in this video.

It's fun to watch Donna stand up for Stilton, and to see Raisin seamlessly receive the message and move on with her day sans the shade of Stilty's fanny.

I think the egg-eater needs something not present or not present in sufficient quantity in their normal diet.

Each bird has a unique GIT, with a highly variable microbiome, and their needs are different because of that, before one factors in age, sex, laying status, etc. Proprietary feeds are based on averages. Birds at the extreme ends of the bell curve suffer more from that than birds nearer the peak.

Natural selection works against egg-eating. So I think it must be driven by nutritional demands over-riding instinct, as and when it occurs.
I'm going for a mental health condition, something like that that causes mothers to kill their chicks.
I don't think I've ever had an egg eater. I've had hens eat eggs that have been broken by accident, or broken for them and in those cases they've eaten all the egg, surface permitting.

Whew, I read that REALLY wrong first time through. lol

When I was a kid people used to scale or fillet alive 😭 they tried to tell me that they didn't feel pain. Which I called BS as a pre teen.
Commercial fishing wouldn't be wracking each fish or removing the head as the lines come in.
Of course when I think about fish eating prey alive I don't feel as bad 😔
I struggle with thought of any creature being tortured and terrified in death. My grandfather who taught me to fish and shoot, said never kill anything unless you are going to eat it and then, do it as humanely as possible. I have always lived by that.
