well, I'm about to put the c.20 to the test, as I can hear Eve clucking gently to her hatchlings... I do hope she won't keep me in suspense for too long... I can't wait to see them

Broody Chipie isn't clucking, but I'm hearing some pips and knocks. I don't want to be too intrusive and check every ten minutes as she is still really scared of me.

Good morning X Batts. Last one we made made the holes smaller. Other a couple birds can eat at one time same hole.. New only one bird can eat at a time ands rats cannot reach them with the covers we made.

Are you sure it wasn't those furry aliens with long ears that drew them out ?

Yes, I’ve never seen any rabbits, foxes, sheeps or mammoths in there.

The chickens go in the small coop mainly to lay their eggs. Or to become a broody.

In the past a few hens liked to stay there overnight. They were at the bottom of the pecking order and got bullied if they wanted to sleep on the ‘summer’ roosts. But nowadays it’s all peace and order.

Sardines should be good - high protein and some fat - just what the Merck Veterinary Manual suggested to avoid fatty liver.

Works for humans also!

I believe that a hen if given the option will choose between roosters. Silky was paired up with Cholo until Gorda displaced her so she took up with Red and now is his number one hen and even roosts next to him. Silky is always first on the roost and when Red comes in the coop he always hops up next to her. I've seen her physically remove big hens who try to take her spot on the roost. Gorda having chosen Cholo will fight any other rooster who tries to mate with her.

Absolutely. It's always the hen that chooses the rooster if she is able.

It was a lovely afternoon after a damp and dreary start to the day. Apparently we are going to be paying for it tomorrow.
I've had to make some alterations to the new coop frame, hence the coop on it's side.
Most of the chickens were absolutely fascinated by me drilling holes with my hand drill, fitting screws and all the moving of things around. Once the coop went back on its base they were going in and out like a train station public toilet.
Fret of course did what she does best and fretted throughout the whole business. One could imagine her telling the others they shouldn't go in and the coop was going to fall over and Bucket Boy would drop that piece of wood he was carrying on them...
