Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Friday.
Not quite as cold, around 5C and sunny again. Some feed in tray on arrival.

Lima Fret and Ella in the pictures above.
Fret trying to get under Henry again. She's lost a bit of confidence I think. Maybe sign of stress due to the decrease in population.View attachment 3381356View attachment 3381357
Henry demonstrating just how big his rear end is compared to the others.

What is Fret staring at in the second picture ? She looks scared !
Henry looks very good though.
No sign from the fox anymore ?

that's a very convincing explanation to my way of thinking. Poor girl. I assume her behaviour inspired you to name her thus, so she might be feeling it more than the others.

A recent episode of Winterwatch (a BBC2 TV show here) drew attention to the unusualness of two adult female otters happily sharing a territory, and speculated that the reason might be the abundance of food for them there (a wild area of the Leith, within the city of Edinburgh). Perhaps my flock's willingness to share their food with Coed has a similar explanation. This was this morning (first one blurry, sorry):
Chirk and Amadeo not bothered by him

Fforest more interested in sex than in him

and in general everyone treating him as one of the flock (he's at the far left bowl here)

I think Fret might be my favorite. ❤️ I can relate to her behavior with change around her.

Very interesting theory. To add to this, my OE was very mean to the others when I started sprinkling cracked corn to lure the flock into the run after ranging. I was very careful to spread it around so everyone could get a couple of pecks at their treat, even dropping it behind me for the more timid girls. She would run around and peck at anyone weaker who tried to get some. She has calmed down a lot, and I wonder if she realizes that there is enough for everyone. At least, I like to think that.

Fret is called Fret because she frets about everything. She's not hysterical, just thinks the worst is going to happen whenever anything looks like it may happen. Carry a a shovelfull of shite over her and she's convinced you're going to drop it and she's going to get covered in it. :D
I haven't seen him again but that doesn't mean much. I expect he's about.

I see Forest is doing the more gentlemanly chest bump than a neck grab.

Sometimes when I fed Tribe 2 and 3 in close proximity some confusion would break out about just whose pile they should be eating from. Notch would sometimes give the warning call and evryone would dive into the bushes leaving him to eat in peace.
